Glaucoma Care From Our GA Eye Doctor
At East Cobb Eye Center, our GA eye doctor is here to help you achieve optimal eye and vision health. We diagnose, treat, and manage a number of common eye diseases here in our office, with glaucoma being among the most common. We encourage regular glaucoma screenings as part of our patients' annual eye exams—especially for those who have risk factors that make them more likely to develop glaucoma.
Glaucoma Causes and Symptoms
Specifically, glaucoma refers to an eye disease that affects the optic nerve in one or both eyes. The nerve becomes compressed as a result of excess pressure build-up in the eyes. Over time, this can lead to a gradual loss of vision. Vision loss caused by glaucoma can be permanent, which is why it's so important to catch and treat it early. If left untreated, permanent blindness could even result.
Unfortunately, glaucoma doesn't often show early symptoms, and red flags may not become obvious to a person with glaucoma until vision loss begins to occur. Still, some of the early symptoms of glaucoma worth seeing an eye doctor about include:
- blurry vision
- sudden eye pain
- sudden deterioration in vision
Glaucoma can occur to just about anybody and at any time, though it is worth noting that those over the age of 60 tend to be at the highest risk. Furthermore, if you have a family history of glaucoma, this will increase your risk of developing the condition yourself. Annual screening is ideal and is key to early detection and more successful treatment/management of the disease.
Glaucoma Management and Treatment in Marietta
Our eye care team offers skilled glaucoma management and treatment in Marietta and the surrounding areas of Roswell, Woodstock, and Sandy Springs. If you are suffering from any glaucoma symptoms, we can perform a glaucoma screening right here in our office. This screening is painless and takes just a few minutes; a special tool allows us to measure the amount of pressure in each eye. If pressure levels are high enough to confirm a diagnosis of glaucoma, we can then begin to discuss treatment and management options to prevent glaucoma from getting worse and to protect your vision as much as possible.
Fortunately, there are many possible treatments for glaucoma, including medications that contain beta blockers to control and lower pressure in the eyes, thus relieving excessive pressure on the optic nerve and providing you with the relief you need. Depending on the severity of your glaucoma, however, we may need to recommend more intensive treatments such as laser surgery.
We will always take your unique needs into consideration when coming up with a customized treatment plan in our office.
